Soon, 1 trainers for the poor

London, November 17 : German sports gear company Adidas will soon launch shoes costing just one euro.

The production of the cheap trainers will start in Bangladesh next year.

The footwear will be sold on a non-profit basis, however, a spokesman for the company mentioned that the final price might go slightly higher than the 1-euro target.

The company is in contact with Bangladesh's Nobel prize winner, Muhammad Yunus, for the project.

Yunus had advanced the micro-loans plan helping the poor start their own businesses.

He apparently told the company that Bangladesh needed "social businesses" which would create jobs in the country.

"It is correct that Adidas Group in conjunction with Muhammad Yunus aims to put such shoes on the market," the Telegraph quoted Jan Runau, an Adidas spokesman, as saying.

He further confirmed that an agreement has been signed to begin production of the shoes in Bangladesh next year.

Adidas has come under fire in the recent past for the amount it allegedly pays workers at its Chinese factories apart from putting huge cash on sponsorship deals and luxury brand prices.
