Mercedes-Benz India losing primacy in India
Even though elitism and affluence in stead of mediocrity is looming large in the realm of India, Mercedes-Benz India has failed to take advantage of the same and is witnessing a reversal with regard to its sales. The same saga has also been corroborated by the company formally and
Mercedes-Benz India expects 2009 sales to be underneath the preceding year mostly on account of lower availability of credit and also owing to the brunt of global economic crisis.
The situation, if truth be told, is grave. On the word of said Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, the company did sell 2,650 cars between January and October and also made t clear that in 2008, it had sold 3625 cars. However, there has been a recovery in the sales of cars in the luxury segment, he added.
Aulbur also stated that in the first half of the year, there was a certain amount of loss of intensity because of the unavailability of credit and that there has been a change in attitude and confidence is back, and the company should be seeing some good numbers. Nevertheless, he turned down requests to give a sales projection. It is to be noted that Mercedes-Benz India in the region of 300 people in R&D centres in Bangalore and Pune and as stated by Aulbur there would be expansion in this space next year that would bring about some employment generation. But he declined to share further details.Mercedes-Benz India is a noteworthy subsidiary of Daimler AG and Daimler entered the Indian market and set up Mercedes-Benz India Ltd in 1994. The company was later renamed DaimlerChrysler India Private Ltd after the merger of parent company Daimler with Chrysler. After DaimlerChrysler sold off most of its equity interests in Chrysler in 2007, it changed its name to Daimler AG. As a result, DaimlerChrysler India was renamed Mercedes-Benz India once more.
