Indian gaming industry has huge potentials

Internet, especially Sony PlayStation is increasingly becoming the best vehicle to disseminate the indigenous culture or games of India across the globe. Sony PlayStation, witnessing the success of the earlier game, Hanuman: Boy Warrior, is taking no other chance this time and has launched its second Indian game Desi Adda: The Games of India. Well, the game can be played both on PS2 and PSP and is available in four languages: English, Hindi, Punjabi and Tamil.

It is to be noted that the game package entails a potboiler storyline along with six endemic Indian games. The plot line moves in this way. Avinash, an NRI, has returned to his grandparents’ village. He is desirous to retake his ancestral house from the village head, Garjan Singh and also needs to make the marriage of Gowri and Gopal possible. Garjan Singh is against this completely. In order to accomplish his solemn objectives, Avinash needs to win six games—pachisi, a chess game; aadu puli aatam, a hunting game; kite fight; kabbadi; gilli danda; and dance game, which includes garba and bhangra moves.

Indian gaming industry has huge potentialsThe game has been developed for Sony by no save for GameShastra, one of the leading Indian game studios, and it took 16 months to attain success. The credit, to a great extent, goes to Prakash Ahuja, GameShashtra’s CEO, a person having lots of hopes for the success of Desi Adda. However he is aware of the challenges it faces and this becomes evident when he says that the Indian kids have grown up playing American games and for that reason changing of the monster-slaying mindset is going to be tough.

In accordance with Prakash Ahuja, studies suggest that the Indian gaming industry is going be around $100 million (around Rs460 crore) by 2012 and the key factor that will enable this industry to flourish will be local content.
