Victorious Indian team given rousing welcome in Chennai


Chennai, Sep.15 : The Indian cricket team, which clinched the Compaq Cup tri-series in Sri Lanka late on Monday night, was given a rousing welcome at Chennai Airport by fans and officials early on Tuesday morning.

The cricketers left for their respective home cities soon after their arrival.

Sachin Tendulkar headed for Mumbai along with a few other teammates. All-rounder Yusuf Pathan left for Baroda.

India beat Sri Lanka by 46 runs to clinch the four-match series, which also featured New Zealand.

Tendulkar scored his 44th ODI century, while off-spinner Harbhajan Singh claimed five wickets to win India's first ODI series in Sri Lanka since 1998-99.

Chasing a mammoth 320-run target, Sri Lanka could score only 273. There main scorers were Tillakaratne Dilshan (42 off 29 balls), Sanath Jayasuriya (36), Thilina Kandamby (66) and Chamara Kapugedera (35). Harbhajan Singh was the wrecker-in-chief, claiming five wickets for 56 runs.
