If wife's younger, life's longer

A young wife is good not only for the ego but also for longevity. Men who tie the knot with women 15 to 17 years younger than them enhance their chances of living longer by as much as 20 per cent, a study has found.

Unfortunately, the same doesn’t extend to women and cougars may well be advised to stay off younger men. For, the chances of a woman dying earlier goes up 20 per cent if the age difference between her and her hubby is 7 to 9 years and 30 per cent if 15 to 17 years. This holds true for women who marry older men, too, said researchers from the Max Planck Institute in Germany.

If wife's younger, life's longerFurther, men who go for older wives have an 11 per cent higher chance of dying earlier. The study, which covered the entire population of Denmark, tracked all deaths between 1990 and 2005.

One explanation for the link between younger brides and longer life for older grooms could be natural selection, said the researchers. It is possible that younger women choose healthier, better maintained older men as their marriage mates.

Sven Drefahl, a spokesman for the Rostock-based institute, offered one more possible explanation. “Another theory is that a younger woman will care for a man better and therefore he will live longer,” he said.

Among some celebrity couples that have a wide age difference are Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, Sanjay Dutt and Manyata, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, and Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor.
