10 factors that predict a stroke
A worldwide study has identified 10 factors that cause a large majority of stokes. The 10 factors that are responsible for 90% of the stroke attacks are common and changing the lifestyle can reduce the risk of stroke.
The factors that are linked with causing 90% of the stroke attacks are diet, smoking, high blood pressure, waist-to-hip ratio, stress, physical activity, diabetes mellitus, lipids, alcohol intake, heart disorders and depression.
The study which is expected to be presented at the 2010 World Congress of Cardiology was led by Dr Salim Yusuf from Mc Master University, Hamilton and published in Lancet.

3000 stroke patients from 22 countries were analyzed for this study. A significant revelation was that people in low and middle income countries made up over 85 percent of the stroke victims.
A mere 14 per cent of the stroke patients who participated in this study were from high income countries. The vast majority (81 per cent) were from Africa, Southeast Asia or India.
Stokes account for a large number of deaths in the world and this study links 90 percent of these deaths to the 10 factors. Thus changes in lifestyle can help prevent stroke from occurring.
For instance a smoker is twice more likely to suffer a stroke than a non-smoker and a patient with high BP has 2.6 times more chances of suffering a stroke when compared to a healthy person.
