Get smart - Take a midday nap

A new study suggest that taking a nap in the mid of the day can really boost the learning capacity of the human brain.

According to the study if a person remained awake for a longer time then the brain drains out and becomes less active but a midday nap or shall we call the power nap can recharge the brain, refreshes the mind and can make one smarter.

Get smart! Take a midday nap39 young adults were selected for the UC Berkeley sleep study and they were divided into ‘no-nap’ and ‘nap’ groups.

The basic idea was to subject the participants to rigorous learning process so as to tax the part of the brain that stores fact based memories called hippocampus.

The nap group were made to sleep for a period of 90 minutes while the other no-nap group were made to stay awake. Later on the participants were again made to go through rigorous learning process and it was found that those who took the power nap did much better as compared to those who remained awake.

Matthew Walker, assistant professor of psychology at UC Berkeley and the lead investigator of the study said that sleep is required to recharge the brain and to clear short term storage in memory.

At the annual meeting of the American Association of the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in San Diego, Calif, held on 21st February Walker had presented his findings.
