Bark extract from pine tree may help reduce mild knee arthritis pain

A new study has revealed that bark extract from French maritime pine tree can act as an anti inflammatory and strong antioxidant, and when used to treat knee arthritis can help relive pain.

For the study Researchers selected people suffering from knee arthritis and some of them were asked to use the bark extract while others were given excuse. The study was conducted on 100 Slovakian adults with mild knee arthritis. The participants were then randomly assigned to either use 150 milligrams of pine bark extract or placebo. The participants were asked to follow the same everyday for three months.

Researchers found that those participants who were given excuses and thereby did not use any medication showed no improvement for their knee arthritis problem.

Participants who used the pine bark extract for 3 months showed promising results. Their pain had reduced and they did find some relief from knee arthritis. Moreover after stopping the pine bark extract treatment, the pain relief effect, still seemed to be intact for an additional 2 weeks.

The study is published in the journal Phytotherapy Research and was funded by Switzerland-based Horphag Research Limited, maker of Pycnogenol.
