Amphibians, birds vulnerable to climate change: IUCN

Study conducted by IUCN – International Union for Conservation of Nature has pointed out that change in the climate not only affects humans but amphibians and birds are also equally vulnerable to the change.

90 biological traits that make species most vulnerable to climate change were identified. The study revealed that 71 % reef building corals, 52 % amphibians and 35 % birds were vulnerable to climate changes taking them to the brink of extinction.

According to Wendy Foden of IUCN's Species Programme, climate change is already in process and this is the first time species that are prone to climate change have been systematically identified.

In the list of species on the brink of extinction, 49 mammal species were from India which includes the bats, deer, tiger and gibbons. Humans are to be blamed for taking the species on the blink of extinction. Pollution and Poaching are some of the man made reason that has played their part in pushing the species towards extinction.

1700 scientists through the world took part in the 5 years study. The study estimated that 1 out of 4 species is in the endangered list and the population of 1 in 2 is dropping.

More details of the study can be found in the latest issue of the journal Science.
