Babies produced from frozen embryos IVF (in Vitro Fertilization) are healthier and the likelihood of being under weight or premature are greatly reduced, a new study has revealed.

IVF techniques have been used by many couples with the success rate as close to the natural fertility. It is a boon especially for infertile couples. Sperm are fertilized with the eggs in the lab and then the embryos are implanted after few days.

Researchers found that using the IVF techniques the embryos that are developed, if frozen before they are implanted in the womb results in healthier babies.

Results from 3 separate studies have pointed out that frozen embryos may produce healthier babies as compare with fresh embryos.

The first study brought to light the fact that babies born after fresh cycles were 15% more vulnerable to mishaps and 51% likelihood of being low-weight at birth.

As per the second study there was a 64% higher chance of lower birth weight and 35% higher chance of premature deliveries for babies from fresh embryos.

The third study also revealed that there was a likelihood of 11% lower birth weight for fresh embryos as compared to 6.5% for frozen embryos. 12.3% premature risk for fresh embryos as compared to 9.4% for frozen embryos. Death risk was 1.9% for fresh embryos and 1.2% for frozen embryo.

However fertility expert Dr Allan Pacey from the University of Sheffield and secretary of the British Fertility Society pointed out that when it comes to getting pregnant frozen embryo transfers are not as successful as fresh ones. “It may be that we have to balance the health of children against chances of success” he added.
