Sivojit Paul, a 7 month old from India was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia a liver disorder condition where there is a missing link between the intestine and the liver.  Sivojit when 6 months old was admitted at Indraprastha Apollo hospital.

According to Dr Anupam Sibal, a senior pediatric gastroentologist at the Apollo hospital, Sivojit’s liver had failed completely and was unable to excrete the bile. Bile also known as gall is a green alkaline or bitter yellow fluid secreted by hepatocytes from the liver.

Dr Anupam Sibal said that it was a challenging case as Sivojit’s health condition was deteriorating and another problem was his age as ideally liver transplant are performed after age one and above as risk reduces with age. The age factor also made Sivojit the youngest to have undergone a liver transplant.

The only option left with the doctors was to go in for a liver transplant despite the high risk. Liver parts from Sivojit’s father Indrajit Paul were taken out and transplanted successfully into Sivojit’s body.

A team consisting of 20 doctors lead by Dr Subhash Gupta and about 16 hours of surgery gave a new life to seven month old Sivojit Paul also making him the youngest to receive a liver transplant.
