A new study by researchers from Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center has revealed that Indian Ayurvedic medicines contain toxic metals that are known to be unsafe.

Ayurvedic medicines harmful to human health

Ayurvedic medicines were ordered using the internet. About 25 stores were selected that sold Ayurvedic medicines online, made in India and the United States. 193 Ayurvedic medicines were ordered by the researchers.

The medicines once received were analyzed thoroughly to find out its contents. The researchers found metals with high exposure levels that are known to be harmful to human health. Metallic poisons such a mercury, arsenic and lead were found in the Ayurvedic medicines.

According to Dr Robert Saper, lead researcher, safety standards of the Ayurvedic medicines need to be re-examined by the FDA. 22% of the Ayurvedic medicines manufactured in the US and 19.5 % in India had toxic metals.

This is not the first time the popular ancient Indian medicine, Ayurveda have come into the limelight for its negativity. Previous studies have pointed fingers on the Ayurveda benefits, but this did not slow down its popularity.

The new studies do point at the Toxic Metals found in Ayurvedic medicines, but many researchers are of the view that the Ayurvedic medicines are useful in combating cholesterol, BP and diabetes. A method need to be discovered that could make Ayurvedic safer by removing the unsafe things.
