Study conducted by WiMAX Forum has estimated that by the year 2012, India will have a whooping 27.5 million WiMAX users of which 70 % will access it through portable WiMAX devices and mobile phones.

WiMAX is a perfect technology for the Indian users. The WiMAX installation is cheaper for the telecom operators, provides data ranges from point links to full mobile cellular access. The WiMAX technology is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard and also called WirelessMAN. A Telecommunications technology, WiMAX, is the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access.
The technology, the cost factor and cheaper WiMAX supported devices together would increase the subscriber base in India and a perfect option for the growing population.
Gartner study predicts that by 2011 the mobile and fixed WiMAX subscriber base could reach to about 6.9 million. According to the study India needs a proper planning and implementation process to make the WiMAX technology available at every corner in India.
The Gartner study blames the Indian government for its failure to encourage telecom operators to opt for All-India mobile broadband.
Currently, Pakistan has the largest fully functional WiMAX network in the world.
